A GOLDEN-HEARTED dad, whose daughter was given just four days to live after she was born, is spearheading a New Year drive to raise funds for 15 different children's charities.

Liam Mulcahy's daughter, Sophie (6), is one of only 40 people in the world to suffer from a rare genetic condition called 1q43 Deletion.

The youngster, from Limerick, has already undergone six heart surgeries in her short life and has suffered serious setbacks like lung and kidney failure.

But her father Liam (32) said his daughter's condition, which has left her unable to walk, talk or feed herself, inspired him to set up a charity, cycle4sickchildren.

And he and 14 other fathers have just embarked on a 15-week diet to shed excess festive pounds and raise cash for the 15 charities to help combat other debilitating conditions affecting young children.

He said: "All the charities have some kind of significance for those of us taking part and they range from Bee For Battens, Pieta House to cancer groups."
