A man has died after a tragic accident at his home in Co Wexford on Saturday morning.

The father-of-three, who was in his 50s and worked as a mechanic, received injuries to the head at his home in Carrick-on-Bannow and was brought to Wexford General Hospital.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is believed that the incident may have involved a "homemade incinerator".

A garda spokesman confirmed that they are investigating the incident, which is being treated as accidental.

Local councillor Willie Fitzharris (FG), who is from the area, said the community is in shock.

"It's very unfortunate for the family involved. They are very well respected people and the man was very well-known. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time," he said.

Cllr Fitzharris said the man was very "well liked".

A family friend and neighbour described the news as "devastating".

"He was a very helpful man, always willing to help others. He was very popular and it's extremely sad that this has happened," the friend said.

The Health and Safety Authority are also following up with an investigation, a spokesman confirmed.
