A MAN has died following farm accident when he was helping a neighbour load bales of hay.

Martin Moran (40), of Rantogue, Aughacashel, Co Leitrim, was helping a neighbouring farmer load bales of hay on to a low loader when a collision occurred at around 1pm yesterday.

Mr Moran, a father of one, was rushed to the Sligo General Hospital by the air ambulance but he died several hours later.

Local councillor Enda McGloin said Mr Moran was well-known and liked in the community, adding: "It was a typical rural situation where one neighbour was helping the other. That is the tragedy.

"They wanted to get the work done and this awful event happened. Martin was a good family man. Both were. It's tough for both families."

Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was killed following a collision with a car on Monday night.

He was named locally as John Brennan (34), of Glengoole, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

Mr Brennan, whose family were publicans in the village, died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car near Mr Brennan's home at Boulick, Gothnahoe, in Thurles around 10pm.
