Cuts 'ground' garda traffic unit

MEMBERS of a rural garda traffic unit claim they're grounded due to budget cuts that left them with one car -- on loan from another section -- that cannot travel at high speeds.
Nine members of the Thomastown traffic unit in Co Kilkenny say they are effectively confined to their barracks after the two patrol cars they previously used were not replaced when their lifespan expired two weeks ago.
Now they must make do with a Galaxy marked car assigned to the forensic section, which has priority over other units, they claim.
A spokesman for the garda press officer said the issue was a matter for the chief superintendents and section heads in specialised units "who can allocate and re-allocate vehicles to meet specific requirements".
