People with Disabilities Ireland, which received €900,000 last year, said it has been told that its funding for 2012 is being withdrawn.

The move sparked outrage from the organisation's board which accused the Government of "silencing" the voices of those in need.

The organisation, which was originally called the Irish Council of People with Disabilities, advocated improved equality, human rights and the dignity of people with disabilities at national and local level.

It has over 8,000 members and affiliated organisations.
