A SUSPECT device has been found at a courthouse in Kerry, where a sitting of the district court was due to begin.

Members of the Garda Emergency Ordinance Disposal Team are on their way to Cahersiveen in Co Kerry, where a crude suspect device was discovered this morning.

It is understood it was found by gardai on steps at the side of the court building.

Gardai are at the scene and the area around the courthouse has been cordoned off and traffic is being diverted.

The library near the courthouse has also been evacuated and sealed off.

A prison van has also just arrived at the scene.

An alternative venue has already been sourced and today's court sitting will now take place at Cahersiveen Community Centre.

Judge James O'Connor presides over Cahersiveen District Court, which sits on the second Thursday of the month.

Local solicitor Paul O'Donoghue said the solicitors and members of the public, who were due in court today, are awaiting further directions.

Mr O'Donoghue said the list of cases that were due to be heard this morning were "standard" district court matters.
