Crowley matriarch recalled as 'an elegant and great lady'
THE woman at the centre of one of the country's most-influential families was remembered as "an elegant and great lady" yesterday.
Una Crowley, wife of the late former AIB chairman and former Independent Newspapers director Niall Crowley, was laid to rest at Shanganagh Cemetery after a packed funeral Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Co Dublin.
Fr Roderic Crowley, brother of Mrs Crowley's late husband, described her as a woman "who had great faith in the power of family" and played a pivotal role in the lives of her six children and 15 grandchildren.
Mrs Crowley's sons are Vincent Crowley, chief operating officer of Independent News & Media (INM); Niall Crowley, ex-chief executive of the Equality Authority; Philip Crowley, a doctor; Peter Crowley, ex-chief executive officer of IBI Corporate Finance and now head of FL partners; and Maurice Crowley, general manager at AIB.
Her daughter Emma, a solicitor, works with the law firm Ronan Daly Jermyn.
They are also nephews and nieces of Laurence Crowley, ex-Bank of Ireland governor.
The coffin was carried by her sons Vincent, Niall, Maurice, Peter and Philip and her daughter's partner, Denis Healy.
Also among the congregation yesterday were former health minister Mary Harney and her husband Brian Geoghegan; Brendan McCabe, former deputy managing director of Independent Newspapers (Ireland), and chief executive of the HSE and former Eircom director Cathal Magee; Gavin O'Reilly, chief executive INM; Joe Webb, chief executive INM (Ireland); Michael Brophy, chief executive of INM (Northern Ireland); Gerard O'Regan, Editor of the Irish Independent; Mark FitzGerald of auctioneers Sherry FitzGerald; and Justice Frederick Morris, chairman of the Morris Tribunal.
