Crowds gather as flats torn down

Demolition of the Charlemont Street flats near Ranelagh began yesterday – 20 years after it was first mooted.

Part of the flats complex was designed in 1944 by renowned architect Michael Scott who, was responsible for Busaras and the Abbey Theatre.

So far Dublin City Council have been unable to finalise a public-private deal on the regeneration of the area after demolition has been completed.

There was plenty of interest as locals gathered to watch a contractor raze the flats complex, which has been part of the south-city skyline for more than half a century.
