Gardaí have recovered six valuable pieces of art stolen nearly three years ago during a planned raid.

The oil paintings, depicting stations of the cross, were recovered by officers in an operation in Edenderry, Co Offaly.

The artworks were reported stolen from the Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, Kiltullagh, Co Galway in June 2013.

The discovery was made by Gardaí attached to Edenderry and Tullamore during a search of wasteland near Edenderry this afternoon.

A garda spokesman confirmed the paintings were found in good condition and have been removed from the scene to Tullamore Garda Station for forensic and technical examination.

No one was arrested during this phase of the investigation and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station 057-9327600, Galway Garda Station 091-538000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
