The savage assault happened at 11.40pm on September 9 last after the gang followed the 29-year-old and his friends from the Temple Bar area.

Sources have revealed that the victim, who is from the Philippines, almost lost the sight in one eye after he was attacked, and required extensive treatment at the Mater Hospital.

Three of his friends were also attacked by the group of male and female attackers, but they were not seriously injured.

The assault victim had performed in Temple Bar earlier on that night.

It has emerged that a gang of youths stole his music amplifier and fled the scene at around 9.30pm.

Some time later, the victim's pals came across the gang in the Crown Alley area of Temple Bar and managed to seize the amplifier back from the group.

However, the gang then followed the Philippines resident and his friends from Temple Bar to O' Connell Street.

It is understood that a number of physical exchanges took place between the groups as they went from the south of the city to the northside before the serious assault took place.

"The group of youths pursued the victim and his friends onto O'Connell Street and a number of altercations took place prior to the victim and his friends being assaulted on the west side of Upper O'Connell Street.

"Those involved are also suspected of having assaulted other members of the public," a garda spokesman said.

Despite having excellent quality CCTV, gardai have not yet identified the youths involved in the incidents.

However, sources say that gardai suspect they are a gang of young criminals who have been involved in serious anti-social behaviour and criminality in the Temple Bar area.
