Man dies after being stabbed near busy shopping centre in middle of the day

A man has died after a stabbing in Longford town this morning.

The victim, believed to be in his 30s and originally from Eastern Europe, was stabbed in the chest on Great Water Street in the town.

The incident happened shortly before 12 midday.

It is understood he staggered into the shopping centre and was attended to by an off-duty nurse.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near Longford town shopping centre, and the victim was brought to Mullingar Hospital.

He was pronounced dead this afternoon.

Gardaí in Lonford are appealing for witnesses.

CCTV will be examined as part of the investigation.

Gardai have arrested a man (24) in connection with the fatal stabbing and he is currently being detained at Longford Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Great Water Street/Rue Noyal Chetillon Street/ or the area of the shopping centre between 11.30am and 12noon today to contact Gardaí at Longford on 043-3350570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
