A man armed with a knife has escaped with a sum of cash after robbing a travel agency busy taking in new year bookings for holidays.

The incident happened in Celbridge, Co Kildare yesterday evening.

The man ran into the Freedom Travel shop on the town's main street at around 5pm and threatened the staff with the blade.

He then ordered them all into a back office and demanded to know where the safe was.

After clearing out the safe he then robbed the staff of their wallets and purses and fled on foot.

It is believed he escaped with a four figure sum of money.

While no staff were injured in the robbery they were left shaken by the ordeal.

No arrests have yet been made.

Gardai are investigating the robbery.
