Several marked cars and the Garda helicopter unit were involved in the car chase on the southbound lane of the motorway, which ended when the silver vehicle crashed near Leopardstown racecourse.

The incident came to an end just before 10pm when the car left the motorway and careered over a curb, sustaining significant damage.

A source said that gardaí followed the vehicle for between 30 and 45 minutes, chasing the car "up and down the M50".

The vehicle being pursued suffered a flat tyre at some point during the chase and witnesses saw sparks coming from the wheel rims. As many as seven Garda vehicles remained at the scene last night.
