The officer was attending a call-out after receiving reports of a raid on a shop on the Lower Drumcondra Road when he came across three men.

During a struggle the garda, who is aged in his 30s and based in Mountjoy Garda Station, was viciously hit across the head and knocked down by one of the robbers.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning at a Centra shop in Drumcondra, north Dublin.

The Centra store has been burgled three times in the past three months alone.

Gardai were called out to the shop after a panic alarm was triggered shortly before 4.15am. When the two officers arrived they entered the shop and discovered three men – wearing balaclavas and armed with iron bars and a hammer – on a stairs.

As the raiders attempted to flee, the young garda grabbed one man outside and restrained him. However, a second raider appeared from behind the garda and hit him on the head, knocking him to the floor.

The three thugs then fled. They have been described as wearing grey tracksuits and hoodies, as well as black balaclavas. A manhunt was launched by detectives from the DMR North Central Division, but no arrests have yet been made.

The injured garda was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital, where he was treated for head injuries.

He has since been discharged and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

The assault comes in the same month that a male and female garda were hospitalised after being assaulted by a gang of youths in the north-inner city.

The two gardai were on uniform foot patrol in the area when they encountered a large gang of youths and were assaulted.
