YOUNG artists received recognition for their creative spirit yesterday as the results of the annual Irish league of credit unions' poster competition were unveiled.

Entrants were required to illustrate the theme "My Credit Union -- My Choice" and the winners were presented with award certificates and cash prizes.

Martyn Turner, the political cartoonist and caricaturist, said the competition showed a high standard of entry overall.

"It is encouraging to see young people taking time out from texting and twittering to participate," he said. "It leaves me hopeful for the future of graphic art in Ireland."

Farlie Flynn-Malon, from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, won the seven-years-and-under category, while Lara McGovern, from Co Cavan, won the eight-to-10-years category.

Shania McDonagh, from Claremorris, Co Mayo, won the 11-14-years category, while Shannon Quilty, from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, was the victor in the 14-17-years category.

Orla Byrne, from Clonmel was named the winner of the 18-years-and-over prize.
