A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a father of one who was stabbed outside his parents' home.

Richard Donovan, with an address at the unofficial halting site Kilcruttin in Tullamore, Co Offaly, was brought before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court last night amid tight security. He was charged with the murder of 28-year-old Derek McDonagh at Arden View in Tullamore.

Mr McDonagh, of Callery Street, Tullamore, was visiting his parents when stabbed to death during an altercation involving 10 men on Monday.

Detective Sergeant John Walsh told Judge Gerard Haughton that when cautioned the accused had replied: "I am sorry for what I done."

Solicitor Donal Farrelly applied for and was granted legal aid in the case.

The defendant was remanded in custody to Cloverhill to appear before a sitting of Cloverhill District Court on Friday.
