Woman charged over mother of three's death

A WOMAN was yesterday charged with unlawfully killing a separated mother of three.
Agnes McCarthy (54), of Castlemaine Street, Athlone, Co Westmeath, is charged with unlawfully killing Lillian Scanlon at Valley Court, Bonavalley, Athlone, on dates between May 8 and May 9, 2008.
Ms Scanlon (48), from Clara in Co Offaly, was discovered dead at her home in Athlone on May 9, 2008.
Dressed in a blue checked hoody and jeans, Ms McCarthy refrained from speaking during the brief appearance at Athlone District Court.
Garda Tom Higgins gave evidence of arresting the woman on Tuesday evening. She made no reply when charged with the offence, he told the court.
He said gardai were willing to consent to bail if she accepted certain bail conditions.
Solicitor Tony McLynn applied for legal aid. He said his client, who is unemployed and has no assets, had an independent surety in court.
Judge David Anderson granted bail on a cash surety of €500.
He ordered Ms McCarthy to sign on daily at Athlone garda station and to live at the address provided at Castlemaine Street in Athlone.
She was remanded on bail to appear before Athlone District Court on October 13.
