THE case against a couple sentenced to three months in jail for having sex in the back of a Dubai taxi should be thrown out because there were inconsistencies in witness accounts, an appeal judge was told.
Irishman Conor McRedmond (29) and British woman Rebecca Blake (30) were convicted last November of stripping on the back seat of a taxi and having drunken sex.
The driver, Qaiser Khan (29) and policeman Abdullah Obaid Khamis (22) gave evidence against them, but the couple's lawyer, Shaker Al Shammary, said the witness statements contradicted each another.
He told a panel of three judges: "This came about because the couple had an argument with the driver after he tried to take a long route home. He saw they were drunk and thought he could take advantage."
Blake, from Dorking, Surrey, and McRedmond, a welder from Tullamore, Co Offaly, were arrested last May 4. They met only hours earlier at a brunch at the Al Murooj Rotana Hotel.
After a 10-hour binge, the pair got into a taxi. According to the driver, Blake had taken her top off within minutes and straddled McRedmond.
The couple denied charges of having sex and indecency but pleaded guilty to drinking alcohol. They were convicted last November of all three charges and fined £512 for drinking. An appeal verdict is expected on February 5.
