TWo men have appeared in court charged with possession of €3.5m worth of heroin and cocaine.
Jason Brennan (31), of Willow Way Road, Primrose Gate, Celbridge, Co Kildare, and Mark Mahony (32), of Oak Court Lawn, Palmerstown, Dublin, were brought before Kilcock District Court where they were charged in connection with the €3.5m seizure.
The men were arrested on Thursday in the car park of the Tesco Extra store on the Monread Road, Naas. Both were charged with possession of heroin and cocaine and with possession of the drugs for sale or supply.
Mr Mahony faces similar charges in relation to €400,000 worth of cannabis at Oak Court Lawn, Palmerstown, Dublin, which was discovered in a follow-up search.
Gardai told Judge Desmond Zaidan that they objected to bail and no application for bail was made. Both men confirmed to the judge that they understood the charges. They were both remanded in custody to appear at Naas District Court next Wednesday, January 23.
The judge ordered that Mr Brennan be medically assessed. He told the court that he is a recovering addict. His solicitor said that he suffered from depression and anxiety and required medication. Mr Mahony uses an inhaler and the judge instructed that gardai inform prison authorities of that. Legal aid was granted for both men.
The judge noted that as the value of the drugs found was in excess of €13,500, the case would likely be tried in front of a jury.
