TWO homeless men have been charged with causing the death of PSNI officer Philippa Reynolds.

The 27-year-old constable (pictured) died in a crash involving a stolen Land Cruiser at the Limavady Road, Derry, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shane Christopher Frane (25) and Conor Tyrone Clarence (23), both of the Simon Community hostel on Bonds Hill, Derry, were remanded in custody and face a total of 14 charges.

Derry Magistrates' Court heard how both men fled the scene immediately after the crash, and the passenger later tried to conceal his identity by changing his clothing.

District Judge Barney McElholm described the death of Const Reynolds as senseless.

Yesterday, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore and Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers expressed their sympathies to the family of the police officer after a meeting in Farmleigh.

Ms Villiers described the young officer's death as "a terrible tragedy".

"My heart goes out to the police officer's family. She'd only joined the police relatively recently," she said.

"I really want to convey my deepest condolences to her family and the police in Derry."

In addition, the Northern Ireland Secretary said the tragedy was "such a terrible body-blow to lose an officer in such terrible and arbitrary circumstances".
