Trainer for Rovers gets five years on drug charge

A TRAINER with Shamrock Rovers Football Club was jailed for five years yesterday for possession of almost €70,000 of cocaine.

Wayne Deans (30), of Swiftbrook Drive, Tallaght, Dublin, was caught with the cocaine on his kitchen table.

He said he was cutting and packing it for someone else in return for a small amount of cocaine.

His wife was in the house at the time and his two children were playing outside.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of just under a kilogram of cocaine at his home on February 12, 2009.

The court heard Deans was heavily involved with several football clubs, including Shamrock Rovers FC, with whom he worked as a volunteer trainer.

His work with the team ceased following his arrest.

The club last night declined to comment on the case.

Judge Katherine Delahunt suspended three years of his eight-year sentence.
