THREE people were yesterday charged with the murder of a 60-year-old grandfather who died from multiple head injuries.

Joe O'Brien (60), of Spring Garden Alley, Waterford, died after a dispute arose at a house party in the city on April 23.

Mr O'Brien suffered head injuries and died after a dispute arose in an apartment at Scotch Marsh.

Patrick Keating (47), formerly of Moyne House at Grattan Quay, Waterford, Joanna Kelly (38) and Michelle Hynes (39), both of no fixed abode, were originally charged with assaulting Mr O'Brien.

The assault charges were struck out and books of evidence were served on all three in relation to charges of murder.

Det Gda David Butler said Ms Hynes and Mr Keating offered no reply when informed of the new charges, but Ms Kelly said: "I didn't murder him."

Judge Kevin Staunton sent all three forward for trial to the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
