A DUBLIN youth who grew his own cannabis to avoid adding to a debt he already owed to drug dealers, will be sentenced in the new year.
Dublin Children's Court heard that the 17-year-old boy's family have had to take out loans to clear his debt which "runs into thousands of euro".
The teenager, whose drug problem spiralled out of control following the death of his father, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis following a search of his south Dublin home on November 30 last year.
In evidence, Garda Marcus Ryan said a warrant was obtained to carry out a search and cannabis worth €10 was found in the teenager's bedroom. A cannabis plant with a street value of €200 as well as "growing equipment" were also recovered.
Judge Ann Ryan adjourned sentencing the youth, who was accompanied to his hearing by his mother, until January 10.
