Peter Fleming (19), of Silveracre, Castletown, Co Laois, is accused of the offences which were alleged to have taken place at the car park of Tesco in Portlaoise on November 21, 2009.

Portlaoise District Court was told that Laois/Offaly Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming was willing to take his son in should he be granted bail.

However, Inspector John Nolan objected, citing concern for witnesses in the case. He said a book of evidence should be ready in two weeks.

Solicitor Declan Breen said his client was addressing an "underlying issue" he had never faced up to before. Mr Fleming had made an appointment for the Granada Institute on January 14, he added.

Judge Gerard Haughton expressed reservations about granting the man bail. He remanded him in custody and recommended he attend the appointment at the Granada Institute. Mr Fleming will appear before Portlaoise District Court on January 21.
