Surf instructor cleared over beach death

A SURFING instructor has been acquitted of dangerous driving causing the death of an American tourist on a beach.

Rowan Minjon (25), of Brandon Bay Lodge, the Maherees, Castlegregory, Co Kerry, had pleaded not guilty to the charge at Inch Beach, Ardroe, on July 2, 2011, at Tralee Circuit Court.

Jenna Hill (58), from Springfield, Kentucky, died instantly from severe head injuries after she was run over by a truck being reversed by Mr Minjon.

The two-day trial heard that Mr Minjon had been employed by the Offshore Surf School when the tragedy happened.

He was reversing a 40ft truck, used as a mobile shop, onto the beach at around 9.45am when he struck Mrs Hill from behind.

In his statement to gardai, Mr Minjon said he had been reversing very slowly because he was aware of tourists on the beach.
