A MAJOR garda operation specifically set up to tackle drug dealing around a popular tourist town has resulted in eight people appearing before court.
Five men, two women and a teenager all appeared at Kilrush courthouse in Co Clare yesterday after they were all charged with having drugs for sale or supply between last November and March.
'Operation Luxor' was a co-ordinated operation between the Garda National Drugs Unit and officers from Kilrush.
It began last year and involved the use of undercover officers in the west-Clare area.
At one stage during yesterday's proceedings at Kilrush district Court, Judge Patrick Durcan said it was remarkable the number of drugs cases that were coming before him.
"There seems to be a drugs endemic in this town," he said.
Judge Durcan accepted jurisdiction in all cases and all were adjourned until July 16.
