Roofer awarded €1.6m after brain injury fall

A ROOFER who suffered a brain injury when he fell through a roof-light yesterday got €1.6m in High Court damages.

Carl Cunningham (29) of Church Road, East Wall, Dublin, plunged 12ft in the accident, which happened on July 5, 2004, when he was working on the roof of Loreto Abbey Secondary School, Dalkey, Dublin.

The case was taken against McGrane Roofing and Cladding Limited, Abbeyvale Lawns, Swords Manor, Swords, Dublin; Richard Howlin Contracting Limited of Ballingly Enterprise Centre, Ballingly, Wellingtonbridge, Co Wexford; and H and E Roofing Limited, of Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Dublin. Liability was conceded by the defendants. Proceedings against Loreto Education Trust Company Ltd were struck out.

It was alleged the defendants failed to have sufficient regard for his safety and provided a dangerous workplace.
