A man accused of escaping from garda custody is on the run after he fled from a court house this afternoon.

Jonathan McCarthy (26) fled Limerick District court house after was refused bail.

A search is now underway in the city to locate Mr McCarthy.

The defendant was in custody since December and is accused of multiple offences including theft, burglary and hijacking a vehicle.

Mr McCarthy, of Quarry Road, Thomondgate, is also accused of escaping from garda custody at Henry Street garda station on December 2, last.

He was brought to Limerick District Court today from Limerick Prison by gardai.

During a bail application, moments before Mr McCarthy fled the court, gardai objected to bail on the grounds that they believed he was a flight risk.

Mr McCarthy's Solicitor Sarah Ryan applied for bail, however this was refused by judge Mary Larkin.

Following the hearing Mr McCarthy made his way from the custody holding area, which is separated from the main body of the court by a glass panelled partition, towards the exit door and fled.

Gardai have sent out a city-wide alert for McCarthy's arrest.
