A Latvian national has been charged with the murder of his partner at their home in Co Kilkenny.

Renars Veigulis (31), with an address at Bridge Street, Freshford, appeared before a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court yesterday morning where he was charged with the murder of Rita Apine (29).

The mother of one was found with serious injuries at her home in Bridge Street, Freshford, on the morning of Sunday, May 14.

Ms Apine, who was originally from Latvia, was transferred to St Luke's Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

At yesterday's court hearing, Det Sgt Sean O'Meara gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Det Sgt O'Meara said that he arrested the accused, Mr Veigulis, on Saturday evening at 8.32pm, and that he replied "no" when the charges were put to him.

Mr Veigulis was originally arrested on the afternoon of Ms Apine's death, but released without charge on Monday of last week, before being rearrested on Friday evening.

He was brought by an unmarked Garda car to the court house in Kilkenny city at 10.50am yesterday, accompanied by a number of marked patrol cars.

Defence counsel for Mr Veigulis, Tony Collier, said that due to the seriousness of the charge a bail application could not be made at District Court level.

Legal aid was granted by Judge Colin Daly, who remanded the accused to appear before Cloverhill district court on Friday.
