Pair refused bail after bombs found

TWO men arrested following the discovery of four primed mortar bombs were under police surveillance.

Seamus McLaughlin (35), of Eastway, Creggan, and Gary McDaid (37), of Glenowen Park, Derry, are charged with conspiring to cause an explosion.

A court in Derry heard two local men were arrested in the Brandywell area on Sunday night following the discovery of the bombs in a van that was stopped by police. The disclosure was made by a detective constable who opposed bail being granted.

Refusing bail, district Judge Barney McElholm said he believed both defendants would flee if released. They will appear in court again for a video link hearing on March 28.
