A collection to take boxer John Joe Nevin's family to London during the Olympics was "half legal", according to a judge.
But Judge Seamus Hughes said the boxer's wife Marie and cousin Mary should not be convicted for carrying out the collection, and asked them to make a €250 cash donation to Nevin's boxing club.
The court heard the women had "jumped the gun" by holding the collection in April last year, when they were found with €61 in cash and a sponsorship card with pledges of €195.20 at Newtown Lawns, Mullingar.
Marie Nevin of Ardleigh Vale, Mullingar, and Mary Nevin, of Grange Meadows, Mullingar, pleaded guilty to organising the illegal collection in the name of the Cavan Amateur Boxing club.
A permit had been applied for several times and was refused.
The Cavan club could only have one permit per year and that was for their annual flag day.
The judge said the proceedings were no reflection on Nevin, adding that the entire country was proud of the boxer.
