Officer injured during arrest awarded €94k
A garda and former Limerick inter-county hurler and footballer has been awarded €94,000 damages at a Garda Compensation hearing in the High Court.
Ms Justice Mary Irvine heard that Garda Brian Begley of Meadow Lawn, Raheen, Limerick, was injured when apprehending a man outside a Limerick pub on July 26, 2003.
Barrister Paul McMorrow told the court that Garda Begley had suffered torn ligaments in his right knee as a result of which he had to curtail and eventually give up inter-county sport.
Awarding €94,000 compensation, Judge Irvine said an underlying condition had not manifested in Garda Begley's other knee and, without the assault, he would have continued playing at the highest level.
