Nicaraguan had €55k cocaine in his stomach
A NICARAGUAN man who carried cocaine pellets worth over €55,000 into Ireland in his stomach has been jailed for one year.
Jairo Arauz Moreno (30), of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the drug for sale or supply on September 20, 2012.
The court heard that Moreno was stopped by customs officers at Dublin Airport and initially claimed he came here to study English.
Gardai were contacted when Moreno refused a cup of tea offered by officials, saying he had taken some liquid medication containing cocaine. Moreno was arrested and a subsequent X-ray revealed a large quantity of pellets in his stomach.
The accused then told gardai he had swallowed 79 pellets of cocaine and that he was getting paid $4,000 to transport the drugs. Forensic tests later confirmed they contained 794g of cocaine valued at €55,591.
