Mum 'prayed over bodies of twin sons' who died after taking a lethal cocktail of drugs

A GRIEVING mother said prayers over the bodies of her twin sons who died after taking a lethal cocktail of drugs, an inquest has heard.

Identical 29-year-old twins Peter and Kevin Moran were found lying side by side in the apartment they shared at Harvey's House, Steamboat Quay, in Limerick city, on May 9.

Their mother Margaret Moran made the grim discovery when she got the landlord to open the apartment after she became concerned for her sons' welfare.

'Wrong'

In her statement to gardai the mother-of-six described how she had a "gut feeling something was wrong" with her youngest children when she hadn't heard from them in a week.

She described finding her sons lying on the floor of the apartment, side by side, with their arms outstretched. She said they were stone cold to touch.

"I knew by their colour they had been dead for a few days . . . I said a prayer, the Our Father," she said.

State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy said the brothers had taken a cocktail of drugs that included heroin, ecstasy, tranquillisers and anti-depressants.

Prof Cassidy agreed it looked as if the brothers could have been pulled or dragged into the position that they had been found in.

She said Peter Moran's clothing was slightly disturbed, suggesting there could have been somebody else in the apartment.

However, Prof Cassidy said there was no evidence of assault.

Limerick Coroner John McNamara said the case was a double tragedy for Mrs Moran.

He said the medical evidence clearly indicated the cause of death was drug related and gardai said no foul play was suspected.

The brothers were originally from Georgian Villas, Old Cork Road, Limerick.

A verdict of misadventure was recorded in accordance with the medical evidence.
