Mum admits to killing eight-year-old son

A mum has admitted to killing her eight-year-old son.

Diane Ward (43) appeared before the Central Criminal Court this morning where she was due to stand trial for the murder of her only child, Anthony.

When asked how she intended to plea, Ms Ward said not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter.

The court was told this plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The body of schoolboy Anthony was found at their home in Charleville, Co Cork, on September 3, 2012.

Initially, gardai were treating the death as a tragic incident.

However, it later transpired the little boy died from asphyxiation and his mother was charged with his murder.

The case was adjourned until next Monday for sentencing,

Ms Ward, with an address at Harrison’s Place in Charleville, was remanded in custody pending sentence.
