Mother denies neglecting child before fatal attack

THE mother of a murdered toddler has denied neglecting her child in the months before her death, a court heard yesterday.

Rachael Martin (25), from Erne Park, Kesh, Co Fermanagh, was charged with "wilfully neglecting (Millie Martin) likely to cause her unnecessary suffering or harm" at a sitting of Enniskillen Magistrates Court in Co Fermanagh, yesterday.

Her 15-month-old daughter Millie suffered fractured ribs and a blow to the stomach days before she died at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children on December 11 last year.

Rachael's partner, 30-year-old Barry McCarney -- who is not the baby's father -- has been charged with murdering the little girl and was remanded in custody.

Yesterday, Ms Martin spoke in court only to confirm that she understood the charge.

Her solicitor questioned Detective Sergeant Jonathon Carroll, asking him to affirm that his client "had vigorously denied the charge". The detective agreed with Ms Martin's solicitor that none of the injuries sustained by the baby were caused by her mother.

Deputy District Judge Bonita Boyd granted her bail with a £750 (€880) surety and ordered Ms Martin to appear again next month.
