John McAreavey is to give evidence in the new year at the trial of two men charged with Michaela's brutal killing in Mauritius.

The Irish Independent revealed last week that hotel workers Avinash Treebhowon and Sandip Moneea were formally charged with the newlywed's murder on Friday.

Previously the pair were facing provisional charges, but the Director of Public Prosecutions in Mauritius has now lodged the case against them with the Supreme Court.

Suspects

A trial date has yet to be announced. However, lawyers said it is expected in the new year.

The suspects have been in jail since Michaela's body was found in the five-star Legends hotel on January 10.

Mr McAreavey is listed as a witness in the case and, although he did not have to travel to give evidence at the preliminary inquiry held during the summer, he will be asked to attend the trial.

Michaela's body was discovered in the honeymoon suite she shared with her husband.

Police believe she had interrupted a thief who was rifling through her belongings.

A post-mortem showed that the beauty queen daughter of Tyrone GAA boss Mickey Harte had been strangled.
