Man who killed parents with axe found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity

A paranoid schizophrenic who killed his parents with an axe has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Julian Cuddihy (43), was charged with murdering his parents Kathleen (73), and James (77), at their family home in Churchtown, Carndonagh, Co Donegal on 22 October 2014.

After 40 minutes of deliberations the jury of seven men and five women came back with unanimous verdicts on both counts of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Justice Margaret Heneghan committed Mr Cuddihy to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum for assessment. He will return to court on June 20 when a doctor will suggest a strategy for Mr Cuddihy's long term treatment and care
