A man is due to appear before court in relation to a violent assault on a young woman.
The man, who is in his 40s, was arrested by gardai investigating the alleged assault on a 22-year-old woman in the early hours of Monday, January 6th.
The man was arrested by officers shortly after the incident and is scheduled to appear before Dublin District Court later this morning.
The alleged victim was walking towards the junction of Effra Road and Grosvenor Place in Rathmines at around 12.30am when she was attacked.
It's alleged the woman was then punched and dragged to the ground where the attacker attempted to cover her eyes and mouth.
Gardai said she put up a brave struggle and managed to scream for help, attracting the attention of a group of passers-by.
The man then fled from the scene but a detailed description was quickly circulated to all garda patrols in the area.
Officers arrested a man later on and carried out a search of his home in the south city.
The man was held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
This allowed gardai to detain him without charge for up to 24 hours, excluding rest periods.
The victim later underwent a medical examination but did not sustain any serious injuries although she was said to have been severely traumatised by the incident.
