A man has pleaded guilty to posing as a gynaecologist and sexually assaulting a young woman.
John Wilkins (59) met the young woman at a hotel bar in Cork and told her that he was a gynaecologist.
He promised the victim, who is in her 20s, that she could receive treatment for gynaecological condition at a clinic in Switzerland for a cost of €4,000.
Wilkins pleaded guilty before Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday afternoon to portraying himself as a qualified medical practitioner between September 11th and 20th last year, and to sexually assaulting the young woman at location in Cork City on September 18th, 2014.
Wilkins, who's from the UK but has no fixed abode, also pleaded guilty to a third charge of illegally obtaining €4,000 from the woman with the intention of causing a loss. This incident occurred on September 22nd last.
A jury of seven men and five women had been sworn in to try the cast at Cork Circuit Criminal Court but Wilkins pleaded guilty before it started and was rearraigned.
Sean O'Sullivan, defence counsel for Wilkins, told Judge Sean O Donnabhain that his client is a "man with physical ailments" and requested that medical reports be put before the court before sentencing.
Judge O'Donnabhain ordered that no matters which could identify the victim could be published, but Wilkins' name could be disclosed in media reports.
Wilkins was remanded in custody to June 12th for sentencing.
