Michael Lynch (24), of Old Youghal Road in Cork, was convicted of assault causing harm to Tara Byrd (25), who said the incident had left her living in total fear.

Ms Byrd was four-and-a-half months' pregnant at the time of the attack. Such was the nature of the burn damage to her leg, doctors advised her not to expose her limb to sunlight.

Judge Dave Riordan described it as a very serious incident that had clearly left the victim very frightened.

The court heard the couple had known each other since Ms Byrd was 19 and began going out in March 2015. They were only going out a short time when Ms Byrd became pregnant. She told the trial Lynch became very controlling of her movements and who she met.

Ms Byrd said he told her he would kill her and bury her body in the woods if she ever cheated on him. On a camping trip Lynch warned her not to look at a young man who was staying in the same area. Three days later, on July 21, 2015, he confronted her as she was watching 'EastEnders'.

"He said he was going to boil a kettle of water with sugar in it and pour it on me," she said.

"Then he said that if I screamed, he would hit me over the head with an iron bar."

Ms Byrd spent 10 days in hospital with third degree burns to her lower leg and later had to receive a skin graft. Lynch was found not guilty of threatening to kill Ms Byrd on the same date. He had denied both charges.
