A 33-year-old man appeared in court yesterday on a charge of assaulting a woman.
John Lynch of Church View, Boyle, Co Roscommon, was taken by gardai to Ballinasloe District Court shortly after 10am.
Wearing a blue tracksuit top and denim jeans, he covered his face from photographers with a baseball cap as he was ushered in a rear door of the courthouse.
He is charged with assault causing harm to Anita O'Hara at Church View, Boyle, on October 3.
Garda Paul Kenny said the accused man had made no reply when charged.
Superintendent Tom Mullarkey said he was applying for a remand in custody and advised Judge Geoffrey Browne that he would be objecting to a bail application.
Judge Browne asked Mr Lynch if he was legally represented and, when advised that he was not, deferred the matter to allow him to consult with a solicitor.
When the case was re-called, solicitor Ciara Macklin said she was not opposing the garda application and Judge Browne remanded the accused man in custody to appear again at Boyle District Court on October 20.
