Judge Anthony Halpin told defendant Patrick Mongan: "Hans Christian Andersen would have come up with a better story."

Mongan (32), of MacUilliam Gardens, Tallaght, admitted to one charge of possession of a sword at MacUilliam Avenue on November 24, 2012.

Tallaght District Court heard that Garda Martin O'Gara responded to a call that a member of the public had seen a man put a weapon into the boot of a silver Opel Zafira.

Mongan, who had six previous convictions, could give no lawful excuse for having the weapon when stopped by gardai, the court was told.

Mongan's solicitor, Padraig O'Donovan, said the sword was "a machete" which his client was using for "cutting bushes".

Convicting the defendant, the judge fined Mongan €250.
