Man fired shotgun at shop worker, court told

A MAN has pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm after a shop assistant was shot in work last May, writes Tom Shiel.

Vincent O'Donnell (47), below, appeared at the Circuit Criminal Court in Castlebar, Co Mayo, yesterday and pleaded guilty to discharging a shotgun at Dympna Walshe.

Mr O'Donnell, of Knockna-brone, Mayo Abbey, Claremorris, admitted causing serious harm to Ms Walshe under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

The incident occurred at the Costcutters store in Balla, Co Mayo, on May 31. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Mr O'Donnell was remanded in custody. The judge directed that a probation report and a psychiatric report be prepared on the accused.
