Man denies he raped partner with carrot

A 53-year-old Sligo man has gone on trial accused of raping his former partner with a carrot after severely beating her.

The man allegedly attacked the woman (45) in November 2011 because she was talking on the phone to a male friend.

She was later found by gardai at a neighbour's house in a bloodied dressing gown and with blood pooling at her feet.

She told the jury her jaw and nose were broken and she spent a week in hospital.

The trial, which continues at the Central Criminal Court, heard the accused admits hitting the woman – after she hit him – but denies rape.
