Man charged with pensioner's murder

A YOUNG man has been charged with the murder of a 73-year-old pensioner at his home last year.

Brendan McGovern (18) appeared at a special sitting of Ballyconnell District Court, in Co Cavan, yesterday morning, charged with the murder of John Golden.

Mr Golden was found unconscious by neighbours in his home at Nedd, Doogary, Killeshandra, by neighbours on the morning of September 7 last.

He died in Cavan General Hospital almost a month later, on October 6.

Mr McGovern, with an address at Killahurk, Carrigallen in Leitrim, was yesterday remanded in custody to appear at Virginia District Court on Friday. Garda Sergeant Shane Heslin told the court he arrested the defendant at 9.17pm the previous evening at Doon, Ballyconnell.

The defendant made no reply when charged with the offence at 9.35pm in Ballyconnell garda station.

Mr McGovern was accompanied by his parents yesterday..

Lady Susan Kilbracken also attended the court. Mr Golden had worked on her estate at Killegar just outside Carrigallen.

The pensioner had lived in the Doogary area for 35 years, and worked as a farm labourer and mechanic.
