Man caught with Uzi in hotel
A MAN who was caught with an Uzi submachine gun in his hotel bedroom just days after he was released from prison will be sentenced later this year.
Fintan Lynch (30) pleaded guilty to possession of the high-powered firearm and a silencer at the Travelodge Hotel, Coonagh Cross, Limerick, on February 10 last.
Limerick Circuit Criminal court was yesterday told that Mr Lynch had discharged his legal team. Barrister Shane O'Callaghan requested that Peter Madden of Madden Finucane solicitors in Belfast be appointed to represent Mr Lynch and asked that the matter be adjourned to allow for preparation of a psychological assessment.
Previously, Garda Brian O'Connor, of Roxboro garda station, told the judge that the gun was in good condition and was operational when tested by gardai. The silencer was not for use with the submachine gun and no ammunition was found at the hotel. Two magazines were found with the weapon.
Lynch, of no fixed abode but originally from Southill, Limerick, had been released from prison on January 29 last and had checked into the Travelodge on the northside of Lim- erick city on February 3 and paid for accommodation until February 11.
He asked hotel staff not to clean his room during his stay.
