A 48-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested over an attack on a 96-year-old woman who was punched during a burglary.
The suspect was detained at his home in Burt, Co Donegal - 10kms from Buncrana where Greta Lilly
was attacked in the early hours of Saturday.
The suspect was arrested last night and is being questioned at Buncrana Garda station.
Mrs Lilly remains in Letterkenny General Hospital where she is being treated for bruising to her ribs suffered when her attacker punched her.
The burglar also gagged her using her cardigan before leaving with a substantial amount of money.
Neighbour and local councillor Ciaran McLaughlin welcomed the development in the case.
He has set up a special fund at the town’s credit union aimed at replacing the money stolen from her home which she had been saving to buy new windows from her cottage.
“I was going to go out on the streets with a bucket and I know I would have received great support from the people of Buncrana,” said Cllr McLaughlin, who lives just yards from Mrs Lilly.
“But this way people can donate how much they want and when they want. The staff in Buncrana Credit Union have been great,” Cllr McLaughlin added.
