Man appears in court for murder charge
A MAN appeared in a midlands court yesterday charged with the murder of a mother of one.
Jason Daly (40), of PJ Delaney flats, Main Street, Mountrath, Co Laois, is charged with the murder of Diane Burroughs (30) at the same address.
The body of Ms Burroughs, who lived in the same complex as Mr Daly, was discovered by gardai at 8pm on Saturday. She died as a result of strangulation, a post-mortem found.
Mr Daly was brought before Judge Catherine Staines at Birr District Court in Co Offaly just before 5pm yesterday.
The defendant, who has a goatee beard, was dressed in blue tracksuit bottoms, white trainers and a blue T-shirt. He remained silent as he stood with his hands clasped for the hearing which was over in minutes.
Detective Sergeant Ken Creegan told the court he charged Mr Daly at 2.10pm yesterday and cautioned him. The defendant's reply to the caution was "guilty".
An application was made to remand Mr Daly in custody and for him to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Thursday. Defence solicitor Declan Breen did not contest this application.
Judge Staines also ordered psychiatric and medical treatment for the defendant.
