A Mayo resident who began sexually abusing his daughter when she was seven years old has been jailed for 15 years.
The 35-year old man, who cannot be identified to protect the anonymity of the victim, was found guilty following a trial at the Central Criminal Court of 23 counts of raping and sexually assaulting his daughter at locations unknown within the State on dates between 2008 and 2012.
The child was aged between seven and eleven at the time of the abuse.
Eileen O’Leary SC, prosecuting, read a victim impact statement from the girl who is now living in foster care. In it she described her father as “a monster in my life who will never go away.”
The abuse came to light when the girl told a classmate that she was having sex with her father. A teacher was informed and contacted the HSE and Gardai.
Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy noted the victim continues to live “a life of shame” and “just wants to feel like everybody else but feels she never will.”
He imposed 15 years imprisonment and ordered that the convicted man be placed on the sex offenders register.
The victim said that at first she thought the abuse was what all fathers did but she had known it was wrong for some time before confiding in a classmate.
She said she was so frightened that she would need to bring a change of clothes to school as she would sweat so much in fear that he was waiting for her.
“I would see the car and know what was going to happen. He would say we were going shopping.
“I was happy getting new clothes but I would have to pay for it afterwards. They were the worst minutes of my life,” her statement said.
Garda Hugh O’Donnell said the man denied any wrongdoing after being arrested even when confronted with telephone evidence which contradicted his evidence of his whereabouts.
Gda O’Donnell said that the girl was taken into care and medically examined on the day she told her classmate and her father was arrested two weeks later. He said her mother had initially left the man but returned to the relationship sometime after.
In her statement the girl said she had a “rapist for a father and a mother that doesn’t care what happens to me.”
She said “he made me go through a court case and lied all the way through it. Even in the end he had to make me suffer. He ruined my life and tried to make a liar out of me.”
She described being made to live with a foster family as further abuse by her parents.
“I thought my mother would take care of me but she blamed me for the family splitting up and would lie and take his side,” she said.
The girl said she was the “loneliest person in the world” and constantly worried that her friends would find out what happened.
